the dragon boat festival, the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, has had ahistory of more than 2,000 years. it is usually in june in the gregoriancalendar.
there are many legends about the evolution of the festival, the mostpopular of which is in commemoration of qu yuan (340-278 bc). qu yuan wasminister of the state of chu and one of china‘s earliest poets. in face of greatpressure from the powerful qin state, he advocated enriching the country andstrengthening its military forces so as to fight against the qin. however, hewas opposed by aristocrats headed by zi lan, and later deposed and exiled byking huai. in his exiled days, he still cared much for his country and peopleand composed immortal poems including l
i sao (the lament), tian wen (heavenlyquestions) and jiu ge (nine songs), which ha
d far-reaching influences. in 278 bc, he heard the news that qin troops hadfinally conquered chu‘s capital, so he finished his last piece huai sha(empacing sand) and plunged himself into the miluo river, clasping his arms toa large stone. the day happened to be the 5th of the 5th month in the chineselunar calendar. after his death, the people of chu crowded to the bank of theriver to pay their respects to him. the fishermen sailed their boats up and downthe river to look for his body. people threw into the water zongzi(pyramid-shaped glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed or bamboo leaves) andeggs to divert possible fish or shrimp from attacking his body. an old doctorpoured a jug of reaglar wine (chinese liquor seasoned with realgar) into thewater, hoping to turn all aquatic beasts drunk. that‘s why people later followedthe customs such as dragon boat racing, eating zongzi and drinking realgar wineon that day.
dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all overthe country. as the gun is fired, people will see racers in dragon-shaped canoespulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly, accompanied by rapid drums,speeding toward their destination. folk tales say the game originates from theactivities of seeking qu yuan‘s body, but experts, after painstaking andmeticulous research, conclude that dragon boat racing is a semi-religious,semi-entertaining program from the warring states period (475-221 bc). in thefollowing thousands of years, the game spread to japan, vietnam and britain aswell as china‘s taiwan and hong kong. now dragon boat racing has developed intoan aquatic sports item which features both chinese tradition and modern sportingspirit. in 1980, it was listed into the state sports competition programs andhas since been held every year. the award is called "qu yuan cup."
zongzi is an essential food of the dragon boat festival. it is said thatpeople ate them in the spring and autumn period (770--476 bc). in early times,it was only glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed or other plant leaves andtied with colored thread, but now the fillings are more diversified, includingjujube and bean paste, fresh meat, and ham and egg yolk. if time permits, peoplewill soak glutinous rice, wash reed leaves and wrap up zongzi themselves.otherwise, they will go to shops to buy whatever stuff they want. the customof eating zongzi is now popularin north and south korea, japan and southeast asian nations.
on dragon boat festival, parents also need to dress their children up witha perfume pouch. they first sew little bags with colorful silk cloth, then fillthe bags with perfumes or herbal medicines, and finally string them with silkthreads. the perfume pouch will be hung around the neck or tied to the front ofa garment as an ornament. they are said to be able to ward off evil.

Competition always carries abreast challenges and opportunities to everyone involved. It might appear in an entrance exam，in a regular class，or in a small public speech.
Those who fail to detect its real nature-whether an opportunity or a challenge a petition really is- will lose something more or less conducive to our growth. Of course，if we take the petition as an opportunity，we will favor it intentionally because they can help us outstand from the average; they will make us bee the focus of public attention; they will grant us more chances and rights to succeed. As a matter of fact，opportunities are supposed to be more perceptible and weling than challenges.
The truth is，however，we will lose more opportunities when we choose to take the "opportunity" fork at the crossroads. The other fork，ignored by us and defined as "fearful challenges"，offers much more chances for the walker in petition.
We have such an inclination in life to overestimate ourselves and hold a thoughtless attitude towards the negative outlook of things.
We believe in the old saying，"Opportunity knocks but just once，" so we always wele it and devote all our spirit and efforts to it. The most devout believer of this saying are the graduates. Why? There are quite a number of them who pay full attention to positions in big cities and are willing to flood into developed areas under any circumstances，even though there will be too much uncertainty for their choices. Innumerable cases go straight to the same miserable end: God seems to refuse to help too many of His worshipers.
In conclusion，to define the quuality of petition seems to be far from valuable sense，for no matter what a petition is，an opportunity or a challenge，it will create nutritious elements for our growth.

good morning ladies and gentlemen, today, i would like to introduce my beloved hometown—inner mongolia to all of you. it has been 57 years since the birth of the inner mongolia autonomous region on may 1st, 1947. dominated by the mongolian nationality, the inner mongolia autonomous region is located on the northern frontier of china. the inner mongolia autonomous region occupies an area of 1.18 million square kilometers and has a population of about 20 million people who represent a score of different nationalities. every time when people talk about inner mongolia, they’ll come down to the vast grassland. yes, the inner mongolian prairie area makes up a quarter of the total grassland area of the country. on the boundless expanse of the inner mongolian prairie are living numerous sheep, cattle and horses, on which our mongolian have lived for generations. that is why the grassland is eulogized as “cradle of life”. there are two vast grasslands in my hometown—hulun buir grasslands and xilin gol grasslands which are both world-famous regions. people in inner mongolia are famous for their bravery, enthusiasm and hospitality. no mater where you are from, as long as you come to a herdsman’s house, you will be warmly entertained with roasted whole lamb and milk tea, and what’s more, you can also appreciate beautiful mongolian songs and elegant dances. it is not exaggerating to say mongolians are born singers and dancers. the moment you set your feet on the grassland areas you will discover it is indeed a real land of songs and dances.

ladies and gentlemen, i can say im no less nervous than my fellow and he was on the first time coming before this house. i can say ladies and gentlemen, that the problem we are facing before us, the problem that i have to deal with today, is how to define success.
it is often too easy, it is often too simplistic to define success as something external, something objective, something dealing with money, fame or reputation. but what i believe success is that it is not external. it comes from within. it is internal. i believe success is that you have to have your own ideals, and that you have faith in those ideals, even in the face of extreme adversity. and that is my definition of success.
i also believe that success is not discriminatory. success does not attach to a mere particular class of individuals. i believe that each and every individual, regardless of race, gender, class or even economic background, has an equal right to success, because each person has the right to develop his own ideals and to pursue those ideals.
a good example of this is the composer beethoven, a man who all of us know has created great symphonies. this man was deaf. this man was unable to hear his own majestic pieces of work. and yet, he held to his ideal of creation of music to the very end. then what exactly does the definition of success mean to me? to answer this question, to exemplify it, i pose a question to this house. i pose a question what brings us here together today, ladies and gentlemen, students and educators as you like. and the answer that i have found is the love for the spoken word.
love for the spoken word means how it is to express, how it is to listen, how it is to understand. because what happens when you have a pause, what happens when you have a rhetoric speech all differs on the impact and communication that you have on your audience. but the meaning of the spoken word applies ever more strongly to those who are unable to speak, or are unwilling to speak. because all the beautiful thoughts and emotions encapsulated in that person will inevitably be lost, if that person is not able to speak.
i once went to australia in 1998,and i saw two pictures drawn by three-year-old children. one was drawn by a normal child, one was drawn by what is known as an autistic child, a child which is exclusive, which is unable to express himself verbally to other people. and you could see the difference between the pictures. one was a picture of a horse very simple and straightforward. one was a picture of a horse a gain, but you could see the life, you could see the spirit, and you could see the detail behind that picture.
so the point i want to make here is that these people do have emotion they understand a lot, but it is very very fatal that they are not able to express themselves. and my definition of success is to share with them the beauty of the spoken word. my definition of success is to teach and be able to change these peoples lives, because i have had the opportunity of encountering these people in my times either at school or during my summer jobs. i have had the time and opportunity to change these people. i have had the time to see exactly what exactly they go d1rough and to understand that point.
my ideal here is to share the beauty of the spoken word to these people. it is fright fatal that these people are not given the opportunity to be understood by the world. i say it because these people are often neglected by the public. i say it because people often think they are awkward and different. but i say we cannot forgive these acts because we must have a proactive approach to teach these people.
i say, ladies and gentlemen, that is important to keep your ideals. i say we should not have a premature abortion of ideals. it is easy to stray; it is easy to be distracted. what i say is let your ideals live on. let the child of your ideals live on, because what i want to leave you with is living you life without an ideal means that your life is not worth living at all. thank you.
